The horseman cometh: How to obtain the exotic shotgun The Fourth Horseman

It seems that about a week into each season, there’s a new exotic quest to do, and this season is no exception. This time around, an old favorite from Destiny 1 is making a comeback: the rapid-firing quad-barreled exotic shotgun, The Fourth Horseman. Built to hunt the biggest game in the system–the Cabal–this shotgun can obliterate just about anything you put in front of it.

In fact, Zavala wants you to use it so badly, he’s ready to give it to you for free, no questions asked. All you have to do is go get it.

Season of the Worthy intro: Questlines, Seraph activities, and progression

The latest season has kicked off with an assortment of new activities to engage with, as well as a seasonal progression system that will provide most players with a steady array of unlocks over time (assuming they haven’t gone crazy with farming and have already unlocked them all).

It’s a pretty large amount of stuff to take in all at once, but aspects of this should be familiar if you played last season. Read on for details about Season of the Worthy’s intro questlines, new activities, and other tips for the season.

Season of the Worthy preview: New story, activities, and loot

Now that Season of Dawn is coming to a close, Bungie has dropped the trailer and a fair amount of info for season 10, called Season of the Worthy. The Red Legion’s plans to use the Sundial to change the course of the Red War have failed, but they’re not giving up just yet. There’s always a plan B.

Unfortunately for us, the Cabal’s plan B is no less destructive. If they can’t conquer the system through conventional means, then they’ll just wipe out the Last City in one decisive blow.

If we’re going to stop them, we’re going to need to call on an unlikely ally, the only force in the system that’s powerful enough to repel the Red Legion’s desperate assault: Rasputin. Read on for details on the story, new PVE and PVP activities, and the new loot you’ll be able to acquire.

Opinion: The sky isn’t falling

That title kind of sounds like pointing out the obvious, but I couldn’t think of a better one.

So a couple of recent news posts on Bungie.net have gotten the community on edge. It started minor with a post detailing a rework to how swords function, which really only led to some concerns about warlock skating. Then a longer post talking about some weapon nerfs coming with the next season made players more uneasy, with two popular weapon classes for boss damage having their effectiveness reduced. The Trials announcement video added fuel to the fire when it was revealed that power would be enabled for the playlist and that artifact levels would indeed be a part of that, with more criticism about the potential for no-lifers to dominate Trials. And finally, Luke Smith posted his latest Director’s Cut post with one very unpopular note: the announcement that legendary weapons would have a fixed lifespan in the future. For people who have been using Recluse exclusively for a year or so now, that wasn’t good news.

The summation of this post is something along the lines of “take a deep breath, it’s not the end of the world.” I do have some criticism for some of Bungie’s plans, but I don’t think the hyperbolic reaction that the community has had is wholly justified.

The life exotic: Exotic weapon catalysts and masterworks

Masterwork weapons have been a part of Destiny 2 since shortly after the Curse of Osiris expansion, introduced originally to help mitigate the slow super regeneration from D2’s launch and provide a little customization for year 1’s static weapon rolls. For the cost of a few Masterwork Cores (now known as Enhancement Cores), players could upgrade their weapons to boost a stat, add a kill tracker, and generate Orbs of Light on multikills.

These were followed up by exotic weapon masterworks with the Warmind expansion, though the process for upgrading exotic weapons was a little different. Players would first need to find an exotic catalyst from various in-game sources which would give the weapon its kill tracking and orb generating abilities. They’d then have to complete another objective to upgrade the weapon fully to a masterwork, furthering its capabilities in some fashion, either through boosting stats or adding a new perk to its abilities.

This guide will go over the locations of exotic catalysts, the masterwork upgrade objectives, and the resulting upgrades when the masterwork is completed.

Updated, 3/4/20: Added an additional farming spot and further details about the Sleeper Simulant masterwork perks.
Updated, 3/11/20: Added info on Lumina and Tommy’s Matchbook catalysts, updated details on MIDA Multi-Tool catalyst, added note on changes to Orpheus Rigs that can affect masterwork grinding.
Updated, 5/4/20: Added info on The Fourth Horseman catalyst.
Updated, 10/3/20: Added info on Trinity Ghoul, Witherhoard, and Ruinous Effigy catalysts.

Opinion: The problems with Eververse

This blog has been pretty much entirely informative posts with a few opinions scattered throughout, but now it’s time to go into some long-form opinion. And what better place to start than one of the more contentious parts of the game currently?

Eververse has become increasingly predatory over the years since it was first introduced in The Taken King, and Tess Everis has become a symbol of the community’s ire towards the microtransaction store. Her repetitive voice lines in the Tower certainly don’t help her image, causing some players to mute dialogue entirely just so they don’t have to hear her talk about sending the whole shipment back to Fenchurch again. It’s gone from a supplement of cosmetics to the primary source, with items earned in-game at an all-time low. You can spend real money on more items than ever, but you’re given fewer items for free each week.

Suffice it to say, Eververse has issues. Here’s my opinions on what those problems are and some possible solutions.

Love in your sights: Crimson Days 2020 guide

Crimson Days, Destiny’s Valentine’s Day-themed holiday, is back again this year, running from February 11th through the 18th. Whether you’re a hopeless romantic with an eye for love, or a cynic who thinks Valentine’s Day is a holiday invented to sell chocolates and greeting cards, you can find the partner of your dreams or work out your frustrations in the standard Guardian way: killing each other repeatedly.

The event is pretty similar to last year’s, but there are some new rewards to unlock in addition to various returning items if you missed out on them before. Here’s a brief guide to the event, covering Crimson Doubles, loot, and Triumphs.

Season of Dawn: Navigating the season’s climax event

We’re in the home stretch of season 9 now, and with today’s reset come a few new additions to shake things up a little. From catch-up mechanisms for those starting late to a new community-wide event, from a new boss in the Sundial to an easy way to grind weapon rolls, it makes for a much more interesting climax than the Undying Mind.

So what’s changed since last week?

Quick Tip: How to get into the Corridors of Time, post-patch

On Tuesday, patch 2.7.1 was released for Destiny 2. While it had the unintended side effect of severely messing with players’ inventories, to the extent of Bungie performing their first-ever character rollback, an intended change was the removal of access to the Corridors of Time, the puzzle event that started on January 14th and was solved a few days later. Any player who didn’t run through it for the emblem and lore book before Tuesday sadly missed out.

However, a glitch has been discovered that enables players to access the Corridors again, provided you have at least one character that hasn’t rescued Saint-14 yet. The glitch is pretty simple, and you can use it to get both the emblem and the complete Pigeon and the Phoenix lore book.
